Travel NOTES | Camiguin Travel Guide

The island of Camiguin is a beautiful place set in Mindanao, surrounded by Bohol Sea. The whole island is also a province; the country’s second smallest both in land area and population. This pearl-shaped island got its name from “Kamagong”. It is not abundant in the area but close to Lake Mainit in Surigao del Norte from where the earliest settlers came. The settlers gave the island this name.

camiguin

Explorers Miguel López de Legazpi and Ferdinand Magellan have actually landed on the island. Camiguin even had a Spanish settlement beginning in 1598, although it was not until 1679 that a major Spanish settlement was established in what is now known as Catarman. The entire island was a sub-province of Misamis Oriental but gained an independent status in 1966.

TRIVIA
  • Camiguin is known as “The Island born of fire”.
  • The island is home to several volcanoes, although only parasitic Mount Vulcan and its host, Mount Hibok-Hibok, are the only active ones.
  • Mount Vulcan is locally known as “Old Volcano” but is actually the youngest in the province, born during the devastating eruption of Mount Hibok-Hibok in 1871.
  • The island is home to the Sunken Cemetery, an actual cemetery sunk by the 1871 eruption of Mount Hibok-Hibok. Today, the area is a major tourist attraction and is marked by a large cross erected in 1982.
  • The island is home to at least 4 endemic species: Camiguin Narrow-mouthed Frog (Oreophryne nana), Camiguin Hanging Parrot (Loriculus camiguinensis), Camiguin Forest Mouse (Apomys camiguinensis), and Camiguin Forest Rat (Bullimus gamay).
  • The island is a relatively safe place to stay and visit, with very low crime rate.

The latter is now among the most used languages across the island and the Kinamigin is on the road to extinction. Some examples of the Kinamigin: Thank you – Salamat | What is your name? – Ino imo ngaran? | Where are you going? – Handi ka ay pailing? | Good evening to you all. – Maupay na duman na injo aan. | People – Utaw | No – Bari | Yes – Oo | Many – Dakol | How much? – Tag-pila? | How do I go to (location)? – Unsaon nako pag-anhi (location)?
